Dr. Dereck Wheeldon – Scientist

Dereck has had a distinguished career in the technical aspects of cardio-respiratory surgery and medicine. He developed a number of devices and techniques for Cardiopulmonary Bypass and was a member of the first UK Heart Transplant Unit, responsible for transplant logistics, organ preservation and various research activities. He was the first European consultant for an Artificial Heart technology company and went on to represent a number of companies, providing teaching, technical support and research as one of two partners in Circulation Technology; Assistant editor of the first international journal of Perfusion; part-time course instructor for the Engineering Dept. of Cambridge University and the recipient of 4 major research grants. Dereck had over 60 articles published in peer reviewed journals and contributed 10 book chapters to educational textbooks. He has a PhD – Organ Preservation for Heart Transplantation.
